My Mantra: “There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.” – Hamlet 2:2, Shakespeare

Diagnosed with migraines at age 5, and with migraine-induced seizures at age 9, I have migraine, with and without aura, as well as Hemiplegic Migraine.

I am an author whose prizes and awards include New York Times Book Review Notable Book and Top 100 Books of the Year, the University of Rochester’s Kafka Award, and the University of Cincinnati’s Elliston Poetry Prize, among others.

I write on migraine for The Mighty, as well as on migraine and on being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse for The Alexandria Papers and other publications such as here at The Migraine Mantras.

I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, including incest and rape by my father, stepfather, and mother. I advocate regularly for other survivors. After retirement, my partner and I moved to New Mexico, where we live on #BigRockCandyMountain in the middle of the desert: we’ll be celebrating our 25th anniversary next summer.

I love to cook and bake, and I reads cookbooks like they’re novels. I am a Mommy to 7 rescue cats and one doggie, most of whom love to sleep on my head, especially when I have a migraine.
